Critical Mass - in the Organization

What is critical mass?

Critical mass is a term we use in organizational development to assess how many people in the organization are needed to ensure that a development / change process in the organization is successful.

The concept addresses the fact that when a group of people need to change themselves, their collaboration and their work processes, it requires an overwhelming majority who all work to move themselves and their colleagues in the desired direction.

That's the critical mass.

What happens if the critical mass is missing?

If the critical mass is not achieved during the process, the project will not be fully successful. The internal resistance to change will maintain the ‘old’ habits.

That's why it's so important to be aware of the critical mass in any organizational and change process.

If the basic culture of the organization is characterized by mistrust of each other, the critical mass can in turn be well over 50% of those affected in the organization.

Securing the critical mass

Motivation for the development / change is decisive for achieving the critical mass. Motivation of the individual in the organization, of course. Since it is individual whether we are motivated by opportunities or by getting away from something we do not like, it is important that both ‘towards’ and ‘away from’ motivation are included.
